THE LAST OF US PART II LEVEL BLOCKOUT

Ever since I played The Last Of Us Part II I wanted to design a level for it, and I finally had the opportunity to during Coatsink's personal development time. I used this to also improve my technical skills within Unreal Engine, using UE5.1.1 and Jakub W's IWALS for the character controller and AI.

I started my level design process with a narrative beat, centering it around the common theme of Ellie’s inability to move on from Joel’s death and need for revenge. With this, I created a scenario which helped informed my location and level design decisions:

Ellie hears of Millcreek Mall, a shopping center with a music store called West Coast Music inside. For some solace, she slips out alone to find a guitar to help her remember Joel by. She makes her way in and finds the music store and a guitar, peculiarly the same one Joel had, but hears voices nearby mentioning Abby. Ellie finds them and then pursues Abby. In the chase the guitar is destroyed as Ellie falls through the floor as it collapses underneath her, ending up in a nest of infected underneath the mall with Abby getting away.
